چکیده

We study the frictional sliding of two ideally incommensurate surfaces with a third incommensurate sheet – a sort of extended lubricant – in between. When the mutual ratios of the three periodicities in this sandwich geometry are chosen to be the golden mean φ = (1 + √ 5)/2, this system is believed to be statically pinned for any choice of system parameters. In the present study we overcome this pinning and force the two ”substrates” to slide with a mutual velocity Vext, analyzing the resulting frictional dynamics. An unexpected feature is an asymmetry of the relative sliding velocity of the intermediate lubricating sheet relative to the two substrates. Strikingly, the velocity asymmetry takes an exactly quantized value which is uniquely determined by the incommensurability ratio, and absolutely insensitive to all other parameters. The reason for quantization of the velocity asymmetry will be addressed. This behavior is compared and contrasted to the corresponding one obtained for a representative cubic irrational, the spiral mean ω.

Superlubricity of Graphite Induced by Multiple Transferred Graphene Nanoflakes

2D or 3D layered materials, such as graphene, graphite, and molybdenum disulfide, usually exhibit superlubricity properties when sliding occurs between the incommensurate interface lattices. This study reports the superlubricity between graphite and silica under ambient conditions, induced by the formation of multiple transferred graphene nanoflakes on the asperities of silica surfaces after th...

Static and dynamic properties of frictional phenomena in a one-dimensional system with randomness

Static and dynamic frictional phenomena at the interface with random impurities are investigated in a two-chain model with incommensurate structure. Static frictional force is caused by the impurity pinning and/or by the pinning due to the regular potential, which is responsible for the breaking of analyticity transition for impurity-free cases. It is confirmed that the static frictional force ...

Friction anisotropy at Ni„100...Õ„100... interfaces: Molecular dynamics studies

The friction of surfaces moving relative to each other must derive from the atomic interaction at interfaces. However, recent experiments bring into question the fundamental understanding of this phenomenon. The analytic theories predict that most perfect clean incommensurate interfaces would produce no static friction, whereas commensurate aligned surfaces would have very high friction. In con...

Molecular dynamics (MD) studies on Friction Anisotropy at Ni(100)/(100) interface

The origin of friction comes from the atomic interaction at interfaces. Analytic theories indicated that there is no static friction on clean incommensurate interfaces, while a recent experiment revealed that the static friction coefficient was anisotropic with respect to the lattice orientation, but did not vanish on two clean Ni(100) mis-orientated surfaces. To understand this friction anisot...

Phase transition of the dry friction between crystalline surfaces induced by normal load

A major source of energy dissipation and surface wear is the kinetic friction at the interfaces of sliding bodies. Traditionally, on a macroscopic scale, this undesirable effect is reduced with lubricating the surfaces by introducing oil into their interface. An interesting phenomenon, called superlubricity, has been reported on a nanometer scale where dry (without lubricant oil) fruition and w...
